If you’re looking for the best places to see sunset in Toronto, there are actually more options than people realise.
I am what you can call a sunsetaholic. I love sunsets everywhere, not just in Toronto, but there’s something about the way this city looks when the sun dips that always pulls me back.. Sun rises are great too, but I’m rarely awake enough to properly enjoy them.
There’s something about the way the light hits Lake Ontario, the CN Tower catching the last glow of the day, and the skyline slowly shifting from gold to pink to deep blue. It’s one of the few times the city feels a bit softer.
I’ve been to all the spots on this list myself, and a few of them I keep going back to without really thinking about it. Some are popular, some are quieter, and a couple still feel a bit underrated.

When Is Sunset in Toronto?
Sunset times in Toronto shift more than most people expect, especially between seasons. I use the weather app for the exact sunset time but here are some estimated time for some of the months
- May: around 8:20 to 8:30 PM
- June: close to 9:00 PM (longest days of the year)
- July: around 8:40 PM
- August: around 8:20 PM by the end of the month
- September: drops from 8:00 PM to closer to 7:00 PM
The best way to plan it is simple: aim to arrive about 30 minutes before sunset.
That’s when the sky actually starts changing. In my opinion, that pre-sunset light is usually better than the moment the sun disappears.
The same spots that work well for sunsets also work really well for sun rises, especially if you want fewer crowds.
The Best Places to Watch the Sunset in Toronto
1. Toronto Islands
This is easily one of the best places to see sunset in Toronto, especially if you want a full view of the skyline with Lake Ontario right in front of you.
The main islands, Centre Island, Ward’s Island, and Hanlan’s Point, each have a different feel, but they all give you some of the best skyline views of the Toronto skyline across Lake Ontario.
Toronto Island is one of my favourite places in the city and somewhere I always recommend. It’s the perfect place if you want a peaceful escape from urban life without leaving Toronto.
Watching the sun dips behind the city skyline while sitting by the water is easily one of the most beautiful sunset experiences in the city. It is truly one of the best spots.
Going about 90 minutes before sunset is the best way to enjoy it fully, especially on a summer day when the light lasts longer.
2. Humber Bay Arch Bridge
The Humber Bay Arch Bridge along the Martin Goodman Trl is one of the most iconic sunset spots in Toronto.
This is a great spot if you want clean skyline views with the CN Tower and tall buildings lined up in front of you. When the sun dips behind the skyline, the reflection on the water makes it even better.
It’s one of those amazing spots that works whether you’re taking photos or just standing still and taking it in.
3. Riverdale Park East
This is one of my favourite free places to visit in Toronto, and one of the most reliable sunset spots.
It sits on a hill facing downtown, and when the sun drops behind the skyline, everything just comes together.
It’s also perfect for a date night, a picnic, or even just sitting and doing nothing for a bit. I’ve done all of those here and it always feels like a good choice.
It can get busy as it is a popular spot, but there is enough space that it never feels overwhelming.
4. CN Tower Observation Deck
Seeing the sunset from that height gives you a completely different view of the city and Lake Ontario. It’s one of those experiences worth doing at least once, especially if it’s your first time in Toronto.
Booking an early evening slot makes it much easier to time it properly with sunset. You can also turn it into a full evening by combining it with lunch or dinner at the CN Tower, since access to the observation deck is included which is one of the best part. It’s honestly a really good option for a date night and feels a bit more memorable than just going up for the view.

5. Trillium Park
Trillium Park is one of my favourite sunset spots along Lake Shore Blvd W, especially when I want something a bit more relaxed.
You still get beautiful sunset views and views of Lake Ontario, but without the busier feel of other waterfront areas. It’s a peaceful spot where you can just sit and take it in.
It’s also one of my favourite places for plane watching, which somehow makes the whole experience even better.
6. Polson Pier
It gives you that straight-on view of the skyline with the CN Tower right in the centre, and it just looks really good from here.
Photographers in Toronto love this spot. More than half the times I’ve been here, I’ve seen at least one photoshoot happening, which says a lot about how good the view is. I definitely get why, it’s one of those places that doesn’t need much effort to look good.
It’s usually quieter during the week, which makes a big difference if you want to take photos without too many people around.
7. Tommy Thompson Park
Tommy Thompson Park is one of the best places if you want a peaceful escape that feels far removed from urban life.
The park stretches out into Lake Ontario and gives you skyline views from a distance, surrounded by nature. It’s a great place if you want something quieter and more open.
It’s also not the easiest spot to get to without a car, which is probably why I haven’t visited as often as I’d like. If you do go, bringing a bike makes a big difference, otherwise it’s a very long walk to the best viewpoints.
8. Sugar Beach
Sugar Beach is one of the most recognizable sunset spots in Toronto.
The Muskoka chairs and pink umbrellas make it a great spot to sit and enjoy the sunset views right by the water. It’s simple, but it works.
It’s also close to plenty of delicious food options nearby, which makes it easy to turn it into a full evening.
9. Scarborough Bluffs
The Scarborough Bluffs feel completely different from the rest of Toronto.
Out here, you’re looking straight over Lake Ontario with no skyline in front of you, just open water and cliffs. It’s a bit of a drive, but once you’re up there, it’s easy to see why people make the trip.
Watching the sunset from the top feels slower and more relaxed compared to downtown. It’s one of those places where you just stand there for a bit longer than you planned.
10. High Park
High Park is one of my absolute favourite places in Toronto. It’s the biggest park in the city, so you get different viewpoints of the sunset depending on where you go.
I love taking walks here and then ending the evening with that soft sunset glow. It just feels like a good, easy way to slow down without leaving the city.

With walking trails, wooded areas, and views near the water, it’s one of the best places if you want a mix of nature and open space.
11. Evergreen Brick Works
Evergreen Brick Works feels a bit tucked away compared to the usual waterfront spots.
It’s one of those places where you can walk around for a while without really noticing time passing. Between the trails, the old brick buildings, and the open space, it just feels quieter.
It’s not your typical sunset spot, but that’s part of why I like it. It’s a good option if you want something slower and less obvious.
12. Marilyn Bell Park
Marilyn Bell Park is one of those places that doesn’t get talked about as much, but it’s actually a really good option.
You still get clear views of Lake Ontario, but without the crowds you’ll usually find closer to downtown. It feels more open and a bit more relaxed.
If you just want somewhere to sit and watch the sunset without too much going on around you, this works really well.
13. Colonel Samuel Smith Park
Colonel Samuel Smith Park is one of the most underrated sunset spots in the city.
Located along Lake Shore Blvd W, the long pier gives you a clear, open view of the water, and it’s much quieter compared to the more central sunset spots. It’s the kind of place where you can just walk out, find a spot, and stay there for a while.
It’s not the most convenient location, but that’s also why it feels less crowded.
14. Woodbine Beach
A classic summer spot.
It’s busier, but that’s part of the experience. You could also spend a full day exploring the Beaches neighbourhood and just end your evening here. It’s one of those areas that’s easy to enjoy without overplanning, with plenty of cafés, restaurants, and little spots to stop along the way.
I love sitting here with some ice cream and just watching the light change over the water. It’s simple, but it’s always a good time
15. HTO Park
Right in downtown Toronto and easy to get to, which already makes it a win.
It’s one of those spots you don’t really have to plan for. You can just head there and it still works.
16. Beare Hill Park (Scarborough)
Beare Hill Park is a bit more low-key, and not as many people know about it.
It gives you more open space compared to the waterfront or skyline spots, and the view feels less structured. It can still get busy depending on the area, but overall it feels more relaxed.
It’s a good option if you want something different from the usual sunset spots.

At the end of the day, the best place to see sunset in Toronto really depends on the kind of view you’re looking for.
Some of my best evenings here haven’t been planned at all. Just ending up by the water or somewhere with a good view, watching the light change and staying longer than I meant to.
